Please note, as a candidate for public office, you are encouraged to read and become familiar with the information relating to campaign laws and procedures included in the packet. Please be advised that the City Secretary's Office will be able to assist you with questions relating to the filing requirements for certain election-related documents.  However, the City Secretary's Office is unable to help candidates with the completion of such documents or pass judgment regarding the sufficiency and timeliness of their required filing.

Qualifications for Office

Candidates for mayor and councilmember shall meet the qualifications for elective office as established in the Texas Elections Code (PDF).

In addition to the foregoing per the City Charter (PDF), candidates for city elective office shall: meet all the requirements for the office prescribed by state law; be a registered voter residing in the City for at least one year prior to the date of the election; be at least 21 years of age by the date of the election; hold no other elected public office if elected; not be a City employee; not be in financial arrears to the City for any reason; and not file for more than on (1) office per election.

Applications can be filed:

  • In person with the City Secretary during normal business hours, Monday through Thursday, 7 am to 6 pm beginning Saturday, July 19, 2025, and ending at 5 pm on Monday, August 18, 2025.  Since July 19th falls on a Saturday, the first day to file in person is Monday, July 21, 2025.
  • By mail beginning July 19, 2025, and ending at 5 pm on August 18, 2025 (original signed document must be received by that date and time by mail to qualify):  City Secretary, City of Lago Vista, P. O. Box 4727, Lago Vista, TX  78645
  • By email (as a placeholder) to the City Secretary at Robin.Smith@lagovistatexas.gov  beginning July 19, 2025, and ending at 5 pm on August 18, 2025 (original signed document must be received by 5 pm on Monday, August 18, 2025), 
  • By fax (as a placeholder) to the City Secretary at 512-267-7070 beginning July 19, 2025, and ending at 5 pm on August 18, 2025 (original signed document must be received by 5 pm on Monday, August 18, 2025), 

Note:  Confirmation of receipt of application will be given no later that the 5th day after the application is received.  The applicant should contact the City Secretary if no notice is given.
