Child Safe Gun Locks

Project Child Safe is a program to help ensure safe and responsible firearms ownership and storage. Project Child gun LockSafe is designed to reduce the risk of firearm accidents in the home and, in particular, to help safeguard children from suffering a tragic injury because of an improperly stored firearm.

Project Child Safe, funded through a grant from the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, has distributed 750,000 gun lock safety kits to law enforcement agencies throughout the state. As part of the program, the Lago Vista Police Department will distribute gun safety kits and 2,000 cable lock devices to community members who request them. The lock, which works like a bicycle cable lock, is threaded through the firearm action, rendering the firearm inoperable. The locks and accompanying educational materials are intended to promote safe handling and secure storage practices among all firearms owners.

Funded by a grant from the Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division, Project ChildSafe has distributed 750,000 gun lock safety kits to law enforcement agencies across the state. As part of this initiative, the Lago Vista Police Department will offer free gun safety kits and 2,000 cable lock devices to community members who request them. The cable lock works like a bicycle lock, threading through the firearm's action to render it inoperable. These locks, combined with educational materials, aim to encourage safe handling and secure storage practices among all firearm owners.

These locks can be used on most types of firearms, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to pick up free gun locks and use them to secure their firearms. While supplies last, interested members of the public may obtain a free gunlock by visiting the Lago Vista Police Department located at 5901 Municipal Complex Way, Lago Vista, during regular business hours (Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) and in the basket on the table. Two gunlocks per person maximum, please.

What is the goal of Project ChildSafe?

Project ChildSafeFirearms accidents in the home can result from an unauthorized individual, often a child, finding a loaded and unsecured firearm in the home. The risk of firearms-related unintentional injuries or deaths can be reduced when firearms owners are aware of and fully understand their responsibility to handle firearms safely and store them in a secure manner. The goal of Project ChildSafe is to inform and educate all firearms owners on key safety issues and to provide firearms safety kits that include a gun locking device.

What kind of locks are being distributed by ProjectChildSafe?

The gun locking device distributed in the Project ChildSafe program is a cable-style gun lock that meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) current testing protocol standard (F2369-04). Cable locks require that many types of firearms be unloaded before the cable lock is installed, providing an extra level of safety. Safety kits are distributed to local law enforcement agencies and are available for residents who request them.
